Drama at the rescue today!

My daughter and I were volunteering at the free-roam (where rabbits get to, well, free roam and socialize with other rabbits). Salmiaki-kun was resting in a cardboard tunnel minding his own business.

Meanwhile, one of the lab rabbit rescues got into a ā€œdisagreementā€ with another rabbit, leading to a chase and almost a fight. The other rabbit skedaddled through the tunnel, over Salmiaki-kun to get away, and the lab rabbit lunged and tried to bite the other rabbit, instead biting Salmiaki-kun.

We broke up the chase, and checked Salmiaki-kun for injuries, but he was fine, just a little fur came loose, no injuries.

We put him back down and he went back into his tunnel, until the lab rabbit came hopping by. Salmiaki-kun bolted out of his tunnel straight at the lab rabbit, with vengeance in his eyes. I haven’t seen him move that fast in ages!

Fortunately we were able to catch both of them before both blood and fur started flying and keep them separated for the rest of free roam. (Queue The Offspring’s Come Out and Play.)

He’s all tuckered out from his big day:

Lookin’ like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

I walked into the kitchen to find he had stolen one of the fresh baked chocolate bran muffins from the cooling rack and was eating it on the floor. :pensive:

Edit to add: this isn’t the first time he’s stolen a nibble of chocolate bran muffins. We usually let them cool inside the microwave. But hubs was cooking bacon for sammies in the oven, which vents thru the microwave fan. He didn’t want the muffins to absorb the bacon flavor and thought (wrongly, as it turns out) the muffins would be safe as he was sitting 5 feet away at his desk and all previous muffin-theft attempts happened when we left one on the table without any people around.

Cat will be fine. He managed maybe one bite and he’s stolen that much before. We consulted the vet regarding his previous thefts and they were not concerned. He cruises the table after breakfast looking for crumbs on the regular. At most, he’ll have a bit of loose stool.

I suppose that’s the result of growing up in a lab?

Exactly! However, once they spend some time at the rescue and are socialized they usually become sweet little cuddle muffins. Sometimes they even bond with other rabbits. I’ve had them sit with me for hours absorbing scritches and cuddles.

This one is still getting socialized, and is usually a very good bunny, but for some reason today was a little too much stimulation. :woman_shrugging:

Bun Fight

Can confirm - it’s a commonly used expression in both Australia and NZ. Refers to bread rolls being thrown, not rabbits in combat. Basically, a heated discussion, usually surprisingly so. Never a great thing, but rarely an actual disaster.

Friends on a London-based forum & chatroom used the term, too.

UK chatrooms can be great places to learn how to speak English tophat-biggrin

Turnabout’s fair play: they found me a useful resource for learning to talk American tophat-biggrin

That was also the first place I used the great little top hatt’d smilies!

At first I wanted the beige ones. Then I really looked at the other two, and said, ā€œOh, God. I want them all.ā€
