I used newspaper pellets (same thing as the pine pellets but made from recycled newspapers) with my cat her whole life. She did not cover the poop, but I don’t think she would have anyhow – she would do what I called “symbolic covering” by making covering motions around the pan but not actually in it.
I wish I’d known about the sifting though. That would have made life a lot easier.
Clay litter sucks and I’m not sure why it’s the norm. Seriously.
I’m trying to move over to my landlord’s son’s property by the end of the month (same rent, so much less apathy about proper home improvements to make) and I’m hoping I can find a feed store on the east side of TJ that stocks the horse bedding.
Mainly due to lack of trash service. If I can’t get internet also, I have no good reason to move there.
Our cat was abandoned by his mother as a kitten and has always behaved a little weird. He doesn’t cover his poop no matter what the litter, but is really bad about kicking it around and tracking it. Pine litter, in a top-entry box, has been working out a lot better.
I hate clay litter but one of my cats loves it. I’ve tried using World’s Best (which I love and our dear departed cats loved) but she’d rather pee in the bathtub. (Which is at least easy to clean.) I wonder if the corn granules of the WB bothers her pads.
Since finding a litter she generally tolerates I’ve been hesitant to experiment.
Of course the other cat doesn’t really give a crap about litter and is happy with whatever.
I have an elderly cat with an autoimmune problem that affects his paw pads and mucous membranes. He will not use the litter filled boxes, which I do not blame him for that, I wouldn’t walk on rocks if my feet bled easily, either.
I use worlds best also, because it is unscented and not clay. Cat box doesn’t smell great, but what’s worse is cat box plus perfume.
For him, I have a box with a pee pad, which he will use if no one has gotten there first, and a box with a washable rag rug which he prefers. He will shit on the floor next to the litter box if he can’t go outside, which he really prefers. I wish they’d all do that, the going outside, I mean.
Pee pads = God’s gift to humanity (and felinity I guess).
Most of us use clay litter (well, not the staff), but I think Dyson had some stones and associates pain with the litter box. He does use it for #2. Sometimes. (Another one of God’s gifts = Febreeze). I wonder if he’d use the pine stuff?
We had to change from Fresh Step to Dr Elsey’s cat litter because of an increasing dust problem. FS used to be OK but I suspect their quality control (and/or desired profit margin) went to shit. (Joke not intended.)
He loves getting in carriers, which is odd since he hates the vet with a passion (and vice versa, I think ). Carriers are especially nice to get into after one of the other cats has just come home from the vet. ???
I store my carriers where the cats can sleep in them (with the doors off so they won’t get trapped). I don’t know if it helps, but the idea is that going to the vet will be less scary if they are going in a carrier that they nap in sometimes. At least it provides protection from some naughty kitten attacking a tail during that nap.
Oddly enough, yesterday I was looking at carriers, since I have more cats than boxes and if I had to evacuate, it would be messy. And, I looked at one just like that. It had four stars, but I’ll add an extra one for Dyson who seems to approve.
I think it’s like the joke about carrying a bomb on an airplane – what are the chances the same carrier will leave the house and go to the vet twice in one day?
