The Pets Thread

If she had a bad intestinal parasite infection in top of the URI, that could be another factor as to why she lacks appetite. Our late Old Man Kitty had a severe intestinal parasite infection at 5 weeks. The vet explained that as a result of this happening during weaning, he wasn’t recognizing food as food and he’d lost his ability to recognize his hunger cues.

We had to force feed him for a week and then syringe feed him for another week. Every 4 hours. After the first week, he and my spouse worked out how he would lick from the syringe in exchange for snuggles and praise from my spouse. He wasn’t ever so cooperative for me.

After the first week, the vet wanted us to offer him the food on a plate and then use the syringe. At about the 2 week mark I hear my spouse cheering the kitty’s name, absolutely jubilant. He was eating on his own. Another week, and he would also consume a few kibbles.

I miss our old man. He died a year ago at 15.

At 15 that is a life well lived for a kitty cat. I’m sure he filled your heart with all the love.

He was a wonderful kitty. His successor has big paws to fill.

I do not know why the kid placed the boulder on the couch but the cats are enjoying it

Bunny health update:

The buck seems to be doing much better. His energy level is back to pre-illness level, he’s been pooping and urinating regularly and at normal size and shape. He seems to have more cecotropes than normal, but that is probably okay, because it is how they get additional nutrients out of their highly fibrous diet. Continuing watching carefully.

So.

Her eye does not look good at all. There’s no green or yellow pus. But her nictating membrane is swolled and red. She won’t even let me cover it with just a handkerchief or a patch of clean cloth. And I do realize that sometimes one has to cause a pet discomfort while trying to help it, but I don’t want to end up making it worse.

She’s just been sleeping, and at least she’s not be wiping at it herself. She won’t eat or drink, so…well, I’ve been through this before with one cat.

I don’t know how it happened; I’m presuming a fight with another cat. No green/yellow pus. She won’t let me bandage it, and as you well know (SIGH), I don’t have the funds for a vet, much less my own transportation to get there. So, if you wanna help…

You might reach out to local orgs that might be willing to help provide low cost vet care

Thank you for doing so, but it’s like the 3rd thing I did this a.m. (Ii’m a thorough person for the most part, having been poor since 2019; i was lower middle class before that, $$ wise that is). Eye surgery can be up to $2K. i alsl don’t have a functional auto or insurance & tabs for it.

Toe beans

He has gotten his teeth caught on his collar 3 times now. Including when quite snug! We’re going to try a beastie band. He’s snuck into the garage too many times for me to be comfortable letting him run around without a tag. His tag says LOST in really big letters

does Nimbus get her teeth stuck in her collar while grooming?
BuddyCat will get super busy in a “deep cleanse” around his neck area, but because i make him wear a bandana (none of our kittehs will wear a proper collar) he just licks at the bandana and spins it around.
he is chipped, but our small neighborhood all recognize him. Buddy has a genetic mutation thing, where he walks about with his tail curled up and forward, toward his head. some call it “ringtail”. he is very identifiable. we adopted him from our elderly neighbor when Joe went into assisted living some years ago. everybody knew “Joe’s Cat” and the colorful bandanas i dress him with are saying, “yes, i have a home!
his chip identifies that home.
he seems to be comfortable with it, and if i do say so, he looks dashing!

don’t know if Nimbus would be more comfortable in a bandana, but it definitely says “i have a person, don’t mess with me”!
of course, a microchip would then be what gets her home.

obviously, your neighborhood and thoughts about chipping may inform your actions on how you adorn your kitteh partners.

ETA: i don’t get the “beastie band”. isn’t that just another collar?

We aren’t sure, we haven’t seen it happen. Just heard when he’s already stuck. Or last time, when his tag pinged off and flew from the fridge 4 ft into the sink
He might be getting stuck during grooming? Except his idea of grooming most of the time is flopping next to Ravus, licking her face a few times, and then letting her do the work.

Wait, this is a genetic mutation? Princess Ravus’s tail is like that! Like a bit of a cork screw going forward along her body. She only does it when she walks. When she grooms her tail, she traps it.

yes! Princess Ravus has the ringtail! it is not entirely rare, but it is distinctive! and also, mostly when they walk. Buddy likes to follow me everywhere. he also followed Joe around when he would walk his dog down the street. you can’t miss it.

don’t k ow if visible tags are a requirement where you are, but our kitteh’s chips give their vax and rabies stats - but they can only be read in a shelter or vet’s office. so, there is that.
it is the identifiability of BudBud that gives him pass where we are, i know. but the colored bandanas that i change every two to three days to a different color, that lets people know he is cared for.

Ours are all chipped. But I’d rather have a neighbor just call us to get them right away than the stress of a trip in a strangers car to the vet or shelter. Ravus wants nothing to do with the outdoors except maybe an open window. Ryuuko will occasionally go out with me on a harness as long as we don’t move more than 5 feet from the door. Nimbus seems interested in the outside and would probably be fine on a harness if I was ever dedicated enough to get him comfortable. He is fascinated by the garage though and I can see him getting in there, the door opening, and him panicking and dashing out away from the house

As usual, if you can’t do anything besides providing moral support, I’m very very okay with that. And please share it around.
