Some people are just assholes, some people do their best not to be, and some people are Eleanor Shellstrops who didn’t have to be awful except our whole society teaches them that empathy is stupid. I won’t claim to know the relative proportions, just I suspect celebrating selfish dicks at every level is no small part of why there are so many.

Since that seems to be a sincere question, I’d guess the answer is: capitalism. Which encourages us to be selfish, and discourages empathy and connection with others.

Undoubtedly in a disaster of any kind you do get both. The good acts are far more common than the bad, but just like a single bad interaction in any situation can overshadow the good ones, the asshats are the ones that stand out to us the most.

Ugh. You can see the bigotry increasing daily ever since Trump’s victory. Anyone who doesn’t fit into their tiny box is a target, and that box is getting smaller all the time. Any kind of disability, any sexuality or gender other than straight male, any race other than white, any religion other than Xtian nationalist, any political views other than rabidly pro-fascist… allowing any of these people to just exist and live their lives in peace is now considered “ridiculous” and a personal affront to their fragile but vast egos. I really hope that the pendulum swings back to the left soon, and swings with so much momentum it lops the heads right off these Nazi fuckwits.

To be fair, he was also dishing out a hero narrative where he alone saved his 90+ year-old neighbor who everyone else in the world forgot about. I didn’t believe that part either, because James Woods is consistently a massive jerk.
