Well this is interesting

Plausible, considering just how much bizarre stuff there is close to the crust:

Edit: we’re also getting better at mapping the mantle on a crude scale: (link contains animated ads)

Interesting you’re replying to @noahdjango with this. Does he have the ark built yet?

That brings back way too many memories…

Edit: this is the model the way I remember it, though:

More from Mark Witton’s blog, not as technical:

Much (all?) of that is due to pressure/temperature that incorporates extra H and O into minerals. When pressure is released the H and O move to a lower energy state and the rock becomes “wet”. As far as “oceans” go, maybe the 2H-and-O minerals are the ones in the mantle that plasticly flow? That’s ocean-like. Ish.

hmm, yeah, it is confusing. sounds like the water is bound up in mineral form but it still flows around.

Ringwoodite in the lower half of the transition zone is inferred to
play a pivotal role in mantle dynamics, and the plastic properties of
ringwoodite are thought to be critical in determining flow of material
in this part of the mantle. The solubility of hydroxide in ringwoodite is important because of the effect of hydrogen upon rheology.
Ringwoodite synthesized at conditions appropriate for the transition
zone has been found to contain up to 2.6 weight percent water.[11][12]
Because the transition zone between the Earth’s upper and lower
mantle helps govern the scale of mass and heat transport throughout the
Earth, the presence of water within this region, whether global or
localized, may have a significant effect on mantle rheology and
therefore mantle circulation.[13]

I love when half-remembered shit from geology class doesn’t embarrass me.

Charles Dawson was involved in several other hoaxes. It’s more likely that he was the hoaxer, or the chief hoaxer, of the Piltdown finds, rather than one of the victims. Scientists were naturally reluctant to assume forgery, butsome initially suspected an accidental association of an ape mandible with a human cranium, until Piltdown 2 seemed to confirm Piltdown 1.

That’s the kind of pussy grabbing we can all get behind in an elected representative!

I’ve been watching these videos from Amoeba records, What’s in My Bag? Saw the one with Big Boi last night. He spends like 2/3rds of it waxing poetic about Kate Bush!

I <3 Big Boi!
