Whatcha Watchin'?

It feels very Disney to me. But he’s such a good actor that it doesn’t matter too much.

I don’t know about that. It actually feels more like the David Tennant era to me, which makes sense since Davies is back as showrunner. I’m just not that impressed with the stories this season so far. They’re pretty meh. I think Gatwa is doing a great job, I’m just finding the stories boring. And I don’t think Disney has anything to do with the production. They’re just the airer outside the UK. It’s still fully owned and controlled by the BBC.

I’ve only seen his very first episode. I was somewhat taken aback by the musical number.

Then maybe the way to put it is that it feels like the known biggest market is the U.S., which has a different expectation about shows, and so it’s geared toward that.

One of the selling points of Doctor Who, for me, is that they do so much with so little: cheesy sets and props, simple filming techniques, but the stories and acting are compelling.

Interesting video talking about denim, and more specifically Japanese denim.

One of the most beloved villains from Dr. Who are the Weeping Angels, which are very much a high school production effect – flick off the lights and move the props – with a storyline wrapped around it.

Well, I actually think this season so far has had noticeably less special effects. It really is reminding me more of the David Tennant era. This last episode, in fact, literally has a monster from that era, and it’s one we never see. That stuff doesn’t feel different to me, I’m just not finding the stories to be very compelling.

I got really worn out on watching Dr Who. I really enjoyed it but the show kept getting more grim… still plenty of goofy Dr Who going on, but the darker themes took up more and more space and that’s not really why i started watching in the first place. I stopped watching right when Peter Capaldi started or maybe a little bit before, but its nothing to do with him specifically. I had just gotten worn out on the direction it had been taking, and i’m not sure if i have the energy to go back to it.

Capaldi’s was more grim in many ways, but he was a stellar actor and was given great scripts. I wasn’t sold on him to start but he really nailed it.

Jodie was robbed by horrible writing.

Tennant 2.0 was ok. The sonic new powers strained suspension of disbelief to their limit. The Who fan in my office and I heavily disagree on NPH’s appearance - I loved it and laughed, he absolutely hated every second he was on screen.

Haven’t seen anything besides the Christmas (?) episode with Ncuti. Dislike the TV remote control look of the sonic. At some point I plan to watch…hoping he is more upbeat and wacky - like a Smith but with more modern pizzazz and less gloomy. I really was annoyed at the neon arrow pointing at the one neighbor in the episode I watched. I assume she turned out to be the Master or another Time Lord or a Dialek in a costume or whatever.

And it was even more sinister than that.
It was made clear that the Imperial officers were well aware that the harvest (which was important for the Empire) could not be completed without the help of illegal immigrants, and that therefore they could let cases slide at their discretion, which of course meant they had an extraordinary amount of unchecked, coercive power over these immigrants. Pretty sure that was the first time that the word “rape” was used in a Star Wars show or movie. Dark stuff. And all too real.

Much appreciated on your personal thoughts for the Doctors that i’ve missed

I think it’s pretty fair to say that Capaldi’s doctor was a different character each season. He started off very angry and there was a payoff to this near the end of the season. It also introduced Michelle Gomez’ amazing Missy.

The next season had him struggle more to understand the revelations of the first season, becoming much softer in personality. It ends hard.

Final season was like watching Voyager, and I mean that in the best way (probably my favorite Trek), as he was doing something different nearly every episode but there was this running monologue in the back that finally pays off. The final episode ends a bit rough but the Christmas episode does a marvelous job of polishing off his story.

For Jodie…I think the writer just didn’t understand how to write strong women protagonists. Either that or really liked his Mary Sue companion rotating team. It’s a shame the character Sacha Dhawan played was wasted against a weak protagonist. Sacha chewed scenery in a way that makes Shatner and Brian Blessed stand up and applaud. And some of her episodes were flat out bad.

Tennant 2 is worth a watch if you have time and some popcorn. It’s absolutely a Disney-fied Who. I felt the writing could use more punch but every actor is throwing everything at the camera. The payoff with Donna was worth it (if ham-handed, but I’ll take it) and Miriam Margoyles’ character in the first episode was killer.

And that’s my summary. Happy Who-ing!

You won’t have much to catch up on if the rumours i keep hearing are true.

I mean… the BBC have denied it but of course they would. It’s no secret that Gatwa and RTD do not get on.

Oh wow… I had not heard that! Yikes, indeed!
