Finished assembling the figure, but am still working on all the decorative accessories.

So many little pieces. So much sanding.

Temps and humidity are approaching Hell’s front porch levels, so I spent the early part of the afternoon updating my wall of happy behind my desk in the janky add-on room that serves as my home office. Some creative work from myself, some from Kiddo, and some from @KeybillyJefe’s awesome postcard art project.

I made some shelf brackets out of a hardwood scrap, oak I think. my friend’s shelf is dark wood, so I reduced a cup of coffee down to almost nothing and brushed on a few coats and dried it in the sun. it raised the grain a little so I sanded it with 220 super fine grit. removed the dust and wiped it with coats of Danish oil until it filled all the end grain, 3 coats, I think.

Do they have a sort of coffee smell?

Nice work!

probably not after the oil, if at all.
[checks]
you can definitely smell the oil, but putting my nose right on it you can tell there’s coffee with it, but it’s extremely faint. like, maybe confirmation bias faint.

Have you tried the vinegar/steel wool trick with oak? It reacts with the tannins and darkens it to a similar look as walnut.

cool, I’ll try that next time. news to me

Am I the only one who thought, “reducing a cup of coffee” meant you drank the coffee?

this client’s basement kind of sucked and they wanted a laundry room, storage, and a different entryway because the space was split up awkwardly.

so first we built this wall where you formerly entered this space. and we cut out the new entryway. the other side of the wall is a wide storage area accessible from the unseen far right basement stairs.

note the raised concrete pad on the floor. we made a platform over it to house the washer and dryer and a huge folding table.

the mud room cabinet on the opposite, existing wall would ordinarily be super easy, but note the floor is tilted for a drain, the pipes overhead, the bricks are sticking out and sunk back, and the left wall drastically out of plumb.

putting 2x4s on the wall to space away from the uneven brick.

instead of making it and setting it to the wall, we mostly had to build it in place.

it really changed the space, particularly finishing the ceiling and getting the plumber to tear out all the pipes over the washer area

to the left

and 180°

there will be hooks on the tops of all three sides of the vertical cabinet walls for hanging clothes and backpacks (they have 3 kids)

two days last week and then six straight 8hr days

deleted the logo on my bike’s seatpost

plastic stencil

• 40 grit sandpaper
• coarse steel wool
• 100 grit
• 220 grit
• fine steel wool

I would have just mirror polished it, but the post is machine-finished with horizontal mill marks, so that wouldn’t have looked right. maybe I’ll just mask the lower bit and mirror polish upwards from the bottom of the oval later, but I’m ok with this

That’s a lot of work to delete a logo. Then again, Zoom done many of us wrong…

I did a lot of patching on the deck today. Most boards are good but a few were retaining moisture when it rained, so I replace those sections. It was really woodworking, since I was cutting precise zigzags in the old boards and mirror-image matching them with the new boards so that each board would have footing on the joists. I had the router out since the new boards were slightly wider, and I trimmed them with a table saw then rounded over the top edge to match, and also the new boards were thicker, so I needed to rout channels for each joist the exact depth of the difference so that the boards would match up on top.

Whew. I’m beat.

Got a kit that makes resin coasters. Can only 2 at a time. The glitter was the kid’s idea. She chose the flowers and the level of glitter. A bit much for me, but she is very pleased. We’ll have to do the other two later. Maybe I can convince her to go with a bit less glitter?

that’s a lot of customization for deck boards. but if the new material doesn’t match the existing, whaddya gonna do?
no wonder you’re tired.

I do a lot of customization on this bike for aesthetics. this was nothing compared to doing the full resto-mod, deleting the black finish on the brake levers and the spokes down to silver, custom painting and upholstering the saddle etc. even wrapping the bar tape one layer took longer, and I have long fingers so I have two layers.
