Women, amirite?

:+1:

The term mansplaining was inspired by an essay, “Men Explain Things to Me: Facts Didn’t Get in Their Way”, written by author Rebecca Solnit and published on TomDispatch.com on 13 April 2008. In the essay, Solnit told an anecdote about a man at a party who said he had heard she had written some books. She began to talk about her most recent, on Eadweard Muybridge, whereupon the man cut her off and asked if she had “heard about the very important Muybridge book that came out this year”—not considering that it might be (as, in fact, it was) Solnit’s book. Solnit did not use the word mansplaining in the essay, but she described the phenomenon as “something every woman knows”.[14][15]

You’re remembering almost correctly. As @MagicFox’s link points out, although the term is associated with Solnit, and she’s often credited with coining it, what happened is that her writing inspired it.

Solnit did not use the word mansplaining in the essay, but she described the phenomenon as “something every woman knows."

(Not sure I’m doing this right, correct me if not)

TIL that Rosalind Franklin was screwed out of not one (DNA structure) but two (RNA structure) Nobels that were awarded to men who used her data. At least in the first case, without her knowledge or permission. And that, although there is now a rule about not awarding posthumous awards, at the time it was perfectly fine. So that frequently used excuse does not fly.

(Also, if you are not familiar with Tibee’s YouTube channel, she does a very good job of presenting really complex concepts in a way math idiots like me can understand, to some degree at least.)

One of my husband’s bosses (the one two up from him) mentioned she was leaving cards/flyers taped in women’s restrooms to the back of the stall doors. She and a group of ladies who did hen nights to complete Postcards for Democracy are all doing it

Nothing will stand in my way
As I embrace my destiny
No, your arrows will not bring me down
You’re just a noise, a whisper in the night
My heart beats harder than the thunder (harder than the thunder)
From fire, I’m born
I am the storm

I do love that piece. It’s part of a playlist I made for one of my daughters: we traded playlists we made specifically for each other, and hers for me was titled “mom” (no capital letter, kill me now!) and mine to her was “Strong Women”.

I have long suspected this subreddit of being operated by bad actors (don’t know if anyone agrees with me on that but that’s my take regardless).

So disturbing that just a couple days after the pro-rape party won and promised to outlaw abortion nationally that a “women focused” sub is suggesting and sharing things that will definitely get people killed.

In an information world where people think vaccines cause autism and bleach cures it… they are telling people to do something that will definitely get them killed and no one will help them while they die either. Some people will have this done to them against their will too, mark my words.

Fuck accelerationists and whatever else runs that place. That shit gets a lot of views too.

Just putting it here since it only affects people who can get pregnant so I wouldn’t want to clog up any other thread with such a rare niche subject (though it also qualifies as dangerous mis/dis/mal/information) but damn… didn’t even take a week.

Huh. Are there also recommendations that we bring back eunuchs?
I hear in some eras, in some nations, that was another effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
(If needed, /s. Trying to capture the tone of that redditor.)

I think the first time I got moderated over there was for using the C word, which as a Brit, confused me a bit (if I were an Aussie, where it’s effectively punctuation, it would have confused me a LOT.)

This then opened my eyes to how a lot of USAian cultural sensitivity is now acting to actively censor platforms owned by US organisations but accessed worldwide, and can be seen at its most deleterious in current YouTube content, where every last swear-word seems to now be censored for fear of demonetisation.

Needless to say, this just makes me want to use the forbidden words more, but I reluctantly, begrudgingly self-censor in places with high concentrations of North Americans.

And this pisses me right off, as I fucking LOVE me some swearing.

Are you angry that you can’t use the “N” word too?

Lot’s of US racists hate that restriction on sites.

It’s inspiring that you want to reclaim the c word for women.

I’m not “reclaiming” it for anyone.

And I’m pretty sure you know that it is far more acceptable to people in the UK and other English-speaking parts of the world, and doesn’t carry the same connotations that it does in the States.
