I know that inherently misogynistic language should be examined and challenged. And especially so by men using it.
Poor you… /s
I love not feeling like my body part is an insult…
I don’t give a shit. I’m also guessing that isn’t universal either, and that there is probably a conversation going on in those countries about the use of the word, especially among feminists… I mean, I KNOW that we’re an in age now where the backlash to wimmins demanding we be treated like human beings is at a fever pitch, but we’re not full on in the handmaid’s tale yet… You can either be an ally and listen to us when we talk about stuff like this, or you can roll your eyes and dismiss us.
And? Why does that matter? We have a mixed group of nationalities here. Do you really want to use a word offensive a lot of us that badly?
Save it for when you are amongst your UK and Australian pals. Or better, find a new cuss word. One that isn’t a gendered insult.
Also, this really isn’t the time for this. An entire nation’s worth of of women just watched our neighbors and even relatives vote to remove our right to bodily autonomy. We are upset. We are angry. We are grieving. Please exercise some respect and kindness by dropping this subject.
Yeah, but see, someone can’t say a word, so that’s the REAL tragedy here!!! I mean, we’re second class citizens, but really what’s that in the face of violations to freeze peach… /s
Well I hope you can all take it in the way it’s intended, but I sincerely apologise for any offense I may have caused. I won’t offer any excuses.
I will never use that word here or refer to it.
Why is this in the thread about women? This doesn’t belong here. Your only excuse for this being in this thread is that you can’t say the C word?
You posted that here in this thread today!?
EDIT: I see this was moved from somewhere else, sorry for reacting too fast, and thanks all for the clarification below.
Still honestly, a depressing read in the context as it now exists.
this got moved from another thread… he started this line of discussion responsible monetization of the BBS… where is was off-topic…
It was moved here from the BBS monetization thread by someone.
I believe it belongs here because the root of the c-word and it’s continued usage is misogyny. There really isn’t any other reason to continue to use a word that large swaths of the world, and particularly the marginalized group to which it refers, finds offensive. Perhaps women in the UK and Australia don’t find it offensive. Gone completely numb to it’s use.
Edit to correct where the post and replies originated.
It’s kind of wild to me that people assume that not speaking up about something must mean acceptance… certainly speaks to the fact that lots of people just don’t think about why someone might not speak up, because they don’t live in a world hostile to their existence in any other way than a very narrow one that does not include being a full human being. Just because a woman in the UK or Australia went along with the usage, doesn’t mean that she was not hurt by it, too. Maybe she just didn’t want to deal with the hassle that comes along with speaking up. Sometimes, it’s just safer to go along than to buck the trend.
Why?
Pro-tip: Intentions don’t matter in a situation like this. It’s not about you, it’s about your actions, and their effects.
Different cultures have different taboos. Anglos don’t eat horse. Europeans don’t eat dogs etc.
I think we’re in agreement. I meant numb to mean both a lot of women don’t notice the pain of it anymore. But I’m sure lots and lots just don’t object. Just like so many things women don’t object to it isn’t worth the potential consequences . The continual balance safety vs. speaking
Sure, obviously. That doesn’t mean it should be okay to fling about a sexist term in a forum that contains a lot of women (and men, presumably) who object to it.
I tried to tell a younger woman that though they don’t make quite enough to jump into an ideal house right away she should not lose hope because with effort they (these specific people due to their careers) will likely be able to save up enough to get a downpayment and the only question will be whether they can get a decent interest rate.
I was interrupted by one of several younger men and lectured about how the wage gap is a first world problem mid-sentence.
I was sexually harassed and assaulted by coworkers and kept my peace about it lol. IDGAF about a wage gap. You don’t even know what the world is like kid!?
I have to hold back that kind of trauma for this kid’s feelings about how women whine too much about pay when all I was going to say was that she can still probably have a baby and a house within a reasonable amount of time despite the economy looking scary. But now I get to hold back all my trauma and get put in my place over some internet bullshit talking point an angry young man wanted to lash out at a woman over.
And I was “silent” in so many ways in that story.
Sorry I really don’t understand that. It might be because I don’t think in English. I will shut up now.
I’m confused about what you don’t understand?
It being a sexist term. As I said I don’t think in English so when I see that word I read it as vittu and that word really doesn’t mean genetalia to me. Like me saying “vittujen kevät ja kullien takatalvi” I don’t see spring [season] of literal female genetalia nor back winter of penises…
Okay, thank you.
