Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd…this means what? We’re supposed to anticipate hearing it so that we won’t be insulted? Do you know what “reading the room” means?
Ah, how well I know that feeling.
@Mungrul the good (even great) news about all this is there are hundreds (or thousands) of better more descriptive cuss words and phrases both existing and waiting to exist.
Suggest a new thread gets born from this productive conversation as I think we are gonna need new words to describe The Aweful over the next 4 years.
For a lot of women, the c-word it is not just a sexist term but a misogynistic and hateful one. It has connotations of impending violence when used against a woman. Particularly in the USA and Canada
It sounds like the Finnish equivalent isn’t really an equivalent in terms of the emotional impact. You probably still shouldn’t use the Finnish word in mixed company here. I’m sure you have far more interesting and less potentially fraught cuss words in your native language. Finnish always struck me as a good language for cussing
It’s equivalent to “fuck”. AFAIK English speakers don’t think of having sex when they say fuck.
Eh. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t. Typically don’t when using fuck to express anger or frustration.
But yeah, c-word is in a whole other category than fuck
Interesting choice for a title. It certainly grabs the attention. Did the author ever discuss why she chose that title. If it was the author and not the publisher
Per your opinion, based upon where you live.
That’s not true for everyone, everywhere.
Not really. Fuck isn’t a gendered epithet.
Ok I know English is bad what I meant by that is that I read the c word in Finnish and The Finnish translation is equivalent to English word fuck.
Does it refer to women’s genitals in Finnish?
As I already said it does but the common usage is so far removed from that meaning that I didn’t think of it as gendered word just like kyrpä (dick). So The normal usage it’s equal to saying fuck in English.
I think i get your point, that in that context, there’s a parallel to English speakers using “fuck” with no sense of sex as part of the meaning.
Nonetheless, in THIS context, the C-word is not detached from a harshly sexist meaning for many, probably most, of us.
Yes, that.
That’s generally the first stage of realizing that a word is sexist or racist. “It’s not really”.
I don’t know; a joke perhaps? She’s written a lot of books with strong women protagonists. For example, her first book series began with The Glasswrights’ Apprentice, which we critiqued ages ago.
I’m sorry if mentioning this offended anyone.
“teach/your children well/so they can tell/what yes and no mean…”
i’m kinda over most IRL women not getting me; why should they be different from IRL men in that respect, lol? And I’m done adhering to others for approval and affection.
Men: Did you have to take a rape-prevention class in 8th grade/when you were 12 years old in school? I did, in 1977 or '78. Because the “Schoolgirl Rapes” were a thing in my neighborhood in Detroit.
Hated liking that, totally get it.
Where’s the angry emoji when you need it?
